Abstract

SAP Extended Warehouse Management introduces a level of structural richness that legacy warehouse and inventory management data was rarely designed to express natively: multi-level handling unit nesting, unit-level serialization, and a broad set of special stock categories, each carrying its own reference requirements. Migrating existing stock into an EWM-managed warehouse therefore involves considerably more than a straightforward quantity and location transfer; it requires deliberately reconstructing packing hierarchies, serial number assignments, and special stock context that may never have existed as explicit, structured data in the source system

This article presents a structured treatment of that complexity. It defines handling unit nesting and shows how migration error rates scale with nesting depth, catalogs the special stock categories EWM supports and their distinct migration reference requirements, and details serialization migration mechanics from source system extraction through EWM serial profile assignment. It provides a reference architecture, migration strategies for each complexity dimension, validation and reconciliation guidance, and governance recommendations, illustrated throughout with structural diagrams, benchmark charts, and reference tables

Illustrative benchmark data presented in Section 4 shows migration data quality error rates increasing sharply with handling unit nesting depth, from under one percent for flat, single-level structures to over thirteen percent for handling units nested four or more levels deep, underscoring why nesting depth deserves explicit attention as a migration risk factor in its own right
